On June 17th, Wauwatosa East Girls Soccer placed second in state, losing to Whitefish Bay 5-1. Even though East had 11 shots on goal, only one got past the goalie.
“All of our hard work throughout the season payed off. We deserved it,” says senior Mariana Ibañez-Baldor.
Head coach Eric Dale adds,“The hardest part was trying to get the girls to believe how good they can be.”
“We had Tosa East Alumni and younger soccer players coming out to support us; this was a great feeling,” junior Abby Schermerhorn shared.
Ibañez-Baldor described going to state as “an amazing accomplishment in itself. We worked so hard to get where we were and it makes me so proud that I shared the field with such amazing players. Looking over the stadium, the atmosphere was surreal.”
Although state is and always will be a memorable accomplishment, the sectional final game against Pewaukee was a high point in the season: “Overall favorite moment was for sure the sectional final game against Pewaukee,” Ibañez-Baldor said.
During the game on Saturday, June 10th, Tosa East was the first to score, but the game still went back and forth in the second half. With approximately three minutes left in the game, East went up 3-2. A quick shot by Pewaukee tied the game at the end of the second half. In overtime neither team scored, so an intense and dramatic shootout took place. It went back and forth, with Tosa East winning 10-9.
Everyone is optimistic about the upcoming season. “Almost everyone in the starting line up is returning,” says Dale.
“I think if we start every game in the upcoming season like we started the last few games last season we could be as good if not better than last season,” says Ibañez-Baldor. “I’m really excited and I know everyone else is too”.
The team dynamic has also improved. Schermerhorn says, “They became my family and I knew they would always have my back on and off the the field.” The team can not wait to get back on the field, and everyone else is excited to cheer them on.
