The weight room at Wauwatosa East is a place that should be pretty familiar to most athletes. A majority of the sports at the school have some type of weight lifting plan that the athletes who play that sport follow. The room is run by Strength and Conditioning Coach David Wells. Many of the coaches that set up the lifting plans stress the importance of utilizing the weight room whenever possible. Athletes can also get speed and agility workouts from Coach Wells. Every sport is designated a specific time to lift weights, which is listed on a schedule in the room. While athletes use the weight room on a regular basis, it is important to note that it is not just for athletes; it is open to any student who attends Wauwatosa East. It is typically a pretty busy place where students condition themselves, regardless if they are involved in a sport.
Recently, the weight room went through some renovations. In the summer of 2016, the school made the decision to add bathrooms near the theater, resulting in a decrease in size of the weight room. Many athletes were not too thrilled when this change took place. Ross Mattes, a junior football player says, “the bathrooms are locked during the day, and typically aren’t being used by students.” Since the bathrooms are not getting much use, it is easy to see why athletes are not pleased with the remodeling and updates that were made. Clearly, there has been quite a bit of disagreement about the addition of the theater bathrooms.
On the other hand, there have been some positives changes to the weight room since the renovations. For instance, Coach Wells has worked very hard to make it a more organized place. Mattes also added, “the changes, made by [C]oach Wells, in recent months have been helpful to get both athletes and students into the weight room. This allows for each group to have more time on the equipment that they need.” It is quite obvious that the schedules put in place have been beneficial to both teams and students.
Overall, Coach Wells has done a lot of work to improve the team schedules. Within the past year, he has created schedules, making the weight room a more organized place. A lot of credit has to be given to Coach Wells for his efforts of making the weight room a more organized environment.
